Abura is a wax like substance, which is applied to the skin to act as a base or "key" for the Kabuki Oshiroi, white paste (Shiro-Nuri). It must be used under the Kabuki Oshiroi, otherwise the paste will not apply properly. It is used by Kabuki actors, Maiko and Geisha. Soften the the Abura in the hands and apply all over the face and all other parts to be coated with white paste.

Before using Abura, a heavier wax, such as, Taihaku must be used to flatten the eyebrows. This is done so that the eyebrows can be concealed with the Oshiroi, in preparation for the "painted" eyebrow.
